Kaunissaari Market place (Kaunissaari, Eurajoki)
Before sawmill activities ended in Kaunissaari in 1923, the island had a busy marketplace, to which sellers travelled dozens of kilometres to sell their products. The inhabitants bought most of their food from the market, as the island provided little opportunity for farming and keeping livestock. Nowadays, the former marketplace is covered by a beautiful meadow. The flora of the meadow includes ballast plants.
Kaunissaari is home to a wide range of animals. This mountain hare (Lepus timidus) was photographed on the cliffs behind the marketplace.
