Säppi lighthouse island (Säppi, Eurajoki)

The buildings in the grounds of the Säppi lighthouse mainly date back to the 1870s. The lighthouse keepers’ houses enclose a rectangular yard at the foot of the lighthouse. They were constructed in accordance with type drawings and represent buildings typical of the lighthouses established in the 19th century. The houses are maintained in their original condition and are grouped in their original positions. Some buildings outside the lighthouse grounds have been destroyed. There are also signs of small-scale farming around the buildings. The oldest known sea mark on Säppi, made of poles, was erected in 1779. However, the island is known to have served as a sea mark and a base for seafarers long before this. Strongly affected by human activity, the lighthouse’s surroundings include a representative range of dry meadow plants, such as lady’s bedstraw (Galium verum), meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis), sweet vernal-grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum), chives (Allium schoenoprasum), wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca), maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides) and hairy oat-grass (Avenula pubescens). The sounds in the background are made by barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) and a common gull (Larus canus).
