Bladderwrack habitat (Laitakari, Pyhäranta)

Brown-greenish bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) thrives on rocky seafloors. In clear water, the bladderwrack zone can extend to a depth of seven metres. Bladderwrack is a perennial plant, and the only large brown algal species found in the Baltic Sea. Dense bladderwrack bushes provide habitats for many species. Filamentous algae, red algae and single-cell surface algae, as well as representatives of the animal kingdom such as sea mats (Electra crustulenta), barnacles (Balanus improvisus) and mussels grow on the surface of bladderwrack. Bladderwrack also offers a sheltered environment with an abundance of food for fry.
