A dense Norway spruce forest in Iso-Enskeri (Iso-Enskeri, Pori)

The dense Norway spruce (Picea abies) forest in the middle of the island has features typical of old-growth forests. The avifauna of the island covered with sturdy conifers includes northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), greenish warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides), goldcrest (Regulus regulus) and red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), as well as lesser spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor) in parts of the lush alder zone. However, despite the considerable area covered by forest, the most numerous species is common eider (Somateria mollissima), several dozens of pairs of which nest on the island.
